Dirt 3 Info
Rally's back, baby. But what the hell is gymkhana?
Dirt 3 is the latest installment in the off-road racing series from developer Codemasters. This time around, Codies are bringing the focus back to rally, the grueling motorsport that made the franchise famous.
What is Dirt 3?
Dirt 3 is an off-road racing game in development by publisher Codemasters' in-house studio, whose racing pedigree stretches all the way back to the TOCA and Colin McRae Rally series. Although it includes several race types, it's focused on rally, a point-to-point motorsport that takes place on a variety of surfaces.
What's New This Time Around?
Size, focus and depth. Codemasters claims this is the biggest driving game it has ever produced. Dirt 3 will have three times as much rally and twice as much track distance as Dirt 2. And where the previous game cast you as a noob driver in a beat-up RV, this installment is all about going pro. The dingy Winnebago is gone – this is serious business. Here's a closer look at some of what's changed from Dirt 2 to Dirt 3:
Cars
There's no official full car list as of this writing, but we're told there will be more cars in Dirt than in any other game in the series. So we're betting on about a million cars. More importantly, the car list reads like a rally fan's wishlist. Celebrating the most iconic cars in the sport's history, Dirt 3's garage represents rides from the 1960s to the present day, right up to legendary driver Ken Block's feisty Fiesta. Here's a look at a sampling of what's been confirmed so far:

Um, What is Gymkhana?
We could have sworn it was a terrible 1980s movie about karate mixed with gymnastics, but it's actually a score-based ballet of automotive obstacle racing. It's been popularized by rally legend Ken Block, and it's a big part of Dirt 3. Find out more about gymkhana.
Career Mode
Travel the world as a top-rated racer, pushing the limits to elevate your global standings. Join a team, gain experience and build your reputation in multiple disciplines. You'll be competing against the biggest names in WRC and IRC racing, and building up your garage along the way.
Multiplayer
Dirt 3 will include eight-player online competitive multiplayer. All career disciplines will be available online, but Dirt 3 also introduces party modes. Want to know what Infected and Robot Attack modes are? So do we. We're bugging Codemasters for more info on those.
Release Date
Dirt 3 is scheduled for global release on May 24.
