Mirror's Edge Review

Mirror's Edge Review

First taste of a new style.

Mirror-s edge can be defined of as the start of something new as it has some of innovative game play which promises to, if nothing, draw some points for innovation. Now whether this style will draw any attention is still yet to be seen.

The game is based in a futuristic society where, for the sake of safety security and cameras have been placed everywhere to the point of nearly eliminating all civil liberties. That is where you come in, or more that is where Faith (the character you play as) comes in. Her and her fellow "runners" live as messengers to pass messengers weapons or anything else that needs to change hands in this overly secure world they live in. When Faith-s sister, Kate, is framed for the murder of a poletion. It falls to Faith and her particular set of skills to save her sister from a life-s imprisonment or worse.
What it all falls down to is free running or parqour a new style sport, which is gradually gaining popularity. The sport combines a little bit athletics with a little bit gymnastics with a lot of daredevilry to make a sport based on running tough city landscape making use of the obstacles in your way rather then letting them stop you. In fact Mirror-s Edge was developed with the help of free runners for the most authentic of game play one can expect with realistic vertigo and injury. Also be prepared to hold you lunch down when you start doing rolls. One thing which might just be too realistic is the falling sounds which are so bone crunching realistic it will make you look away every time you fall.

Right now you might be thinking "Prince of Persia has been leaping around and running up walls for some 15years" but what sets this game apart is its first person point of view. You not only play the game with faith as your character but you play trough her eyes and that is what makes this game something new.
Something else that makes this game something new is the world. The urban landscape you travel trough, well, it-s clean. Very clean! Eye damagingly bright, surgical white! All the landscape, tough being beautiful from a distance close up it is nothing more then solids with some textures. One might argue that it is new modern and fresh another might say they wanted to save money. My personal opinion is that I like it, if you push the game brightness to zero.

What the map does is have a good mix of wall runs, pipe climbs and long jumps. There are sections which are purely about speed, others require some combat while others require some taught and planning to solve the puzzles and climb to a particular door or vent in some creative way yet others need some combination of them all giving you a variety of things to do so you won-t get bored too quickly. The combat is pretty simple. Basic kicks and punches which can be combined with movement keys to make them vary, like doing a flying kick. You also have a disarm move which if used at the right time will disarm the attacking cop.
The game play is new and innovative. The graphics are good tough the colors are a little bit bland. The story line is good but not done to its best. I am hoping the coming years will bring a Mirror-s Edge 2 with a stronger story and a new improved graphics and I am seeing the new style take off and multiple sequels for this game.

Now I am going to go try some stuff out on my roof. Hope to see you soon.
